Behind the scenes at the NetApp Innovation Awards video shoot
It was a hot summer morning in mid-July at 1&1 Karlsruhe. Fully loaded with blue cube seats and camera equipment, a group of 1&1 Server and PR team members headed to the roof terrace. At the top, before you knew it, the 1&1 cubes were stacked into a pyramid—then thrown through the air. The reason for this unusual scene: a competition by the data storage and data management specialist NetApp. 1&1 was chosen as the only European company among the four finalists of the twelfth “NetApp Innovation Awards.” As a nominee, 1&1 was asked to introduce the company—and especially the Server experts—with a video.
The task from NetApp: Shoot up to 60 minutes of material to present the company and its work in the cloud section with NetApp products. To give the project a personal and unique character, we were provided with an action cam, including all kinds of accessories, to shoot a video. Once filming the 1&1 world in fisheye optics, the first sequences nearly shot themselves: the 1&1 Server team in a meeting, engrossed in technical discussions or just fooling around on the roof terrace, the panoramic view from the 1&1 building and a tram ride through Karlsruhe City. An old hardhat was rapidly transformed into a helmet camera to get scenes from a first-person perspective, and the 1&1 video production team in Montabaur captured impressions of the headquarters.
NetApp visits Karlsruhe, Germany
Barely a week later, a second day of shooting took place—this time, under the guidance of marketing and camera teams from NetApp, who have come from the West Coast of the United States. After an initial greeting and a brief tour of the location, NetApp began professionally shooting everyday working scenes in the offices of the Server Team. Next, they cut pictures around the 1&1 campus, the 1&1 brand and the 1&1 cloud products. At a joint lunch, we got to know the American visitors. Finally, we visited the center of Karlsruhe, collecting footage of the region’s technology and the IT hub of Karlsruhe. We ended the day with coffee, overlooking the palace gardens.
Several hours of film and video recordings have come together in this eventful and somewhat unusual video shoot. NetApp put our best scenes together in a great video—you can watch the result here: http://bcove.me/712qmf6c
