Be online today – 5 Steps to having your own website
It’s now been over 25 years since the first website went online and back then, that was not possible without manually writing the HTML yourself. Nowadays you don’t need to be a fully-fledged programmer to create a professional website in just a few steps. From comprehensive content management systems, simple homepage builders to free frameworks, the possibilities are almost endless. But what’s the best tool for your needs and what exactly is required to build your own website? Modern hosting packages usually include a wide range of features that can help to make a website, but there are so many options. To help make the decision easier, I’ve put together a few simple tips:
Register your own domain!
Most hosting packages include at least one domain. Be sure to carefully consider both the domain name itself as well as the ending. Country specific endings such as .us are popular but universal endings like .com are also a good choice. Ideally, your website should be named after your project or business. If your first choice of domain is taken, it’s worth checking new domain endings like .online, .web or .shop for example.
Create a professional e-mail address
Before creating your own website, I advise you to create a professional e-mail address first. Once you’re website is up, visitors will want to know how to contact you. The best options are something like email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org. Most hosting packages will include a free e-mail account, but make sure you pay attention to the conditions.
To ensure your website is attractive for visitors, you should already be thinking about what kind of content will appear there. What kind of photos are you going to display? What kind of information is interesting or important for your visitors? How do you want to display the content, on just one page or across multiple page? Only after having answered these questions can you start building your website.
Create the website
The most exciting step is definitely choosing the right tool for your website. If you don’t have much experience in web design or don’t want to invest a great deal of time in learning, a website builder is the right choice. It will enable you to create a site easily via drag and drop without requiring any technical know-how. All of our hosting packages include use of our website builder. Why not give it a try?
If you want to be more flexible and enable dynamic content, then a content management system is the best choice. WordPress is a particularly popular choice and the majority of web hosts offer specific WordPress packages. With thousands of free designs and add-ons, there are practically no limits to using WordPress.
A third and classic alternative of course is to develop the website yourself. This option is only available if you can already code, are ready to start learning or are willing to employ someone else to do it for you. If you’d like to give it a shot yourself, there are plenty of internet tutorials to help you.
Once you’ve chosen the right tool and created your content, there’s nothing more to do than hit the publish button. Just connect your domain to your new website and it will be online and visible to the world.
Have fun and good luck with your new website!
