What is Domain Name Collision?

Domain Name Registration

An important issue to understand with regards to top-level domain registration is the topic of Name Collision. According to the Internet Cooperation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a name collision occurs “when an attempt to resolve a domain name in a private name space results in a query to the public Domain Name System (DNS). When the administrative boundaries of both the private and public namespaces overlap, name resolution may yield unintended results.”

To better explain the definition above, consider the following example: Your company could have an internal server for employees in New York City, with an internal host name called 123.storage.nyc. Employees can access this network internally, but when the official .NYC top-level domain (TLD) becomes available and someone else registers the name storage.nyc, the employees’ Web browser does not know where to send the request– to the internal server, or the external domain name.
