Cloud transformation in hosting

As you are no doubt aware, 1&1 has been active in the hosting market for over 25 years, with innovation at the forefront of our priorities. One of the questions I’m often asked by industry outsiders is how to be innovative within the hosting market. Outsiders usually believe that everything needed is already available and that as performance and speed levels are already very high, there’s nothing left to optimize.

Highest score: 1&1 Cloud Server test winner in the Cloud Spectator benchmark

Chart showing the results of the Cloud Spectator benchmark of the analyzed cloud vendors in terms of pricing-performance ratio.

Performance and pricing-performance ratio – these are the priorities of the annual report “Top 10 Cloud Vendor Benchmark 2016” by American analysts Cloud Spectator. In this survey, our 1&1 Cloud Server competed with similar products of cloud service vendors like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Compute, Rackspace or IBM SoftLayer. It evaluated the relative performance of virtual machines (VMs). In detail, the benchmark focused on the server components processor (vCPU), memory and disk storage. It proves a first-class performance and an unprecedented pricing-performance value of the 1&1 Cloud Server.

Detailed Results from Cloud Spectator: 1&1 Cloud Server Outperforms Competitors in Benchmark Performance Test (download)

Cloud Spectator, a global agency specializing in the analysis of Cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), recently evaluated the 1&1 Cloud Server. The benchmark was conducted to assess 1&1’s newest cloud solution in terms of overall performance and price-performance. Simulating end-user experience, Cloud Spectator conducted a series of unbiased performance tests on five similar mass-market cloud solutions – 1&1, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Aruba Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and CloudSigma. The assessment took into consideration processor, memory bandwidth, network storage, and internal network features.

The initial results, published earlier this month, showed the 1&1 Cloud Server provides competitive levels of raw performance and price-indexed performance, with strong price-performance value throughout the course of the study. The highlighted areas where the 1&1 Cloud Server excelled:

  • Highest performance on vCPU, memory bandwidth, and storage performance
  • Excellent price/performance value in vCPU, memory and even better on the storage tests
  • Most stable performance over the test period

Now, the full report (a 27 page PDF : Cloud IaaS Performance & Price-Performance – Comparing Linux Compute Performance of 1&1, Amazon AWS, Aruba Cloud, CloudSigma, and Microsoft Azure) detailing the methodology, findings, and summary is available to download.

1&1 Cloud Server’s High Performance Demonstrated in Cloud Spectator Benchmark

In preparation for the launch of our new 1&1 Cloud Sever, we asked Cloud Spectator, a global analyst agency, to review our product. The purpose of the survey was to evaluate the raw-performance and price-performance of the 1&1 Cloud Server. To conduct a proper analysis, Cloud Spectator reviewed the virtual machine (VM) performance and the relative performance of VM sizes two, four, and eight vCPUs. Their analysis focused on measurements from components such as virtual cores, memory, block storage, and the internal network. Furthermore, they compared the 1&1 Cloud Server with similar products from Amazon Web Services (AWS), Aruba Cloud, Microsoft Azure and CloudSigma. The benchmark’s results prove the 1&1 Cloud Server’s superior level of overall performance, price-indexed performance and price-performance value.

The key findings for 1&1 VMs include:

  • Highest performance on vCPU, memory bandwidth, and storage performance
  • Higher price-performance value across the vCPU, memory and greater on the storage tests
  • Most stable performance over the test period
