Mobile Devices: An Ally of the Cloud

Mobile & Cloud

Mobile devices have become one of the main allies in cloud development. The fact that consumers use an increasing number of smartphones and tablets has directly benefited many cloud solutions and services. With constant connectivity, businesses and users benefit from the advantages that cloud solutions deliver.

Prior to the widespread adoption of mobile devices, it was businesses that developed and implemented specific technologies and spread them to the consumer market. Google has been making major changes to its search algorithm that make it easier for mobile users to find relevant websites. The emphasis on providing a quality on-the-go browsing experience was strengthened when Google began taking mobile optimization into consideration for ranking results in April this year. What you need to know about Google’s new algorithm

Just a few years ago, relatively few users used mobile devices to search the internet. Today, 55% of consumers perceive a business as “behind the times” if they do not have a mobile website. Furthermore, local mobile searches (85.9 billion in 2013) are projected to exceed desktop searches (84 billion) for the first time in 2015 And expectations are that these figures will continue to swing up over the next few years.

Nevertheless, the word about the mobile web has still not gotten around to all website operators and online merchants with many of them not having a mobile site optimized for small touch displays. In the worst case, they even rely on technologies like flash, which is not supported in any way by most mobile browsers meaning that those sites cannot even be viewed properly at all.

What is Mobile first?

When designing a website, traditionally one would first think about how it would appear and function on a desktop computer and then later consider optimizing it for alternative devices. ‘Mobile First’ is the reverse of that concept and starting with – you’ve got it – mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. While the most common way to approach Web design is from the largest to the smallest screen, Mobile First suggests that the designs will be stronger when working from the smallest platform to the largest. With more and more people reaching for their phone for browsing and shopping online, it’s essential to have a mobile optimized website. So, why not start there?
