1&1 Hosts TechGirlz 50th TechShop

1&1 Hosts TechGirlz 50th TechShop

Whether we see it in our television shows, hear it on the radio or read it in a book, there is a perpetual stereotype portraying individuals in the technology field as bona fide nerds. Everything from Steve Urkle’s jeans to Screech’s weirdness is cast onto the entire field of IT professionals. Although this may be an exaggeration in terms of social cues, wardrobe choices and many other factors, there is a real-life reflection in these characters: IT geniuses are predominantly portrayed as male characters.

TechGirlz is a non-profit organization set to eliminate the stereotype of a male-dominated IT industry and entice girls to throw their hat in the ring. The organization creates a platform introducing girls to technology at an early age, opening their eyes to career options in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) industries.

New Testimonial: So Curly So Kinky So Straight Salon

So Kinky, So Curly, So Straight Homepage

Salon owner Monica Green is the first to admit that the idea of creating a website for her Cleveland, Ohio based salon So Curly So Kinky So Straight (www.socurlysokinkysostraight.com), was intimidating. However, with the ease of 1&1 Internet’s MyWebsite product, website creation and management has never been easier or more beneficial for Green’s entrepreneurial venture.

“In terms of running my business, the smartest tool we could have invested in is our website. As a start-up, I knew that having a website would be vital to our business, but I knew that I couldn’t afford the services of a professional website developer. Before purchasing 1&1 MyWebsite, I thought that websites were expensive and really difficult to create. I was intimidated as I am not a technical person and knew that it was beyond my capability.

Web Apps Increase Functionality of Your Website

Last week, we hosted a webinar that highlights the new Web Apps that are available for 1&1 MyWebsite, our website-building application tool. In general, Web Apps are third-party applications that a user can input directly into their website to improve the functionality and capability of their online presence, and make a better experience for their customers and website visitors. These apps span a few different categories such as:

  • Online Shopping – These apps are helpful if you manage an online store and are trying to sell products online. You can add something like PayPal directly on your website to make payment transfers easier.
  • Social Media – By adding Facebook or Google+ buttons on your website, you allow your visitors or customers to easily share your content or follow your company’s pages on social media.
  • Multimedia – If you have a lot of videos or photos online, these apps are useful to easily allow your visitors to see them. So instead of having them go to an external site, they never have to leave your page to watch a video.
  • Communication – These apps are helpful if you would like to allow your visitors to easily communicate with you through services such as Skype.
  • Other Web Services – Applications like Google Maps help your customers easily locate and find directions to your business.

There are close to 100 applications currently available for MyWebsite customers, with more being added every day. For example, one of our newest apps, added last week, is Yelp Reviews. This app gives website visitors the chance to see and write reviews for the business site they are visiting. If your business has positive reviews on Yelp, it encourages new customers to shop with you. Including it directly on your website can be a significant bonus.

In addition to new apps, there is still continuous improvement of already existing apps, adding more functionality and/or increasing usability. These are new features that small and large businesses can both benefit from including on their company website.
